It was great to see him!

As many of you know, this fall began a number of transitions in our family, not the least of which was our oldest son going off to college. And unfortunately, due to a House of Bishops meeting in Quito, I was unable to participate in the ritual of dropping your child off at school.

Consequently, it had been early August since I last saw the lad, and with the strong encouragement of my bride and lots of juggling of the schedule, I flew out this last weekend for Parent’s Weekend.

Even though we Skype most Sunday nights, it does not replace being truly face to face. It was great to get a feel for his new world: the small room he shares with a big guy, the new friends he has met and where he spends his time.

As you might imagine, my son and I live on different schedules. So I took advantage of my discretionary time while he was sleeping to look up some old camp buddies. Not unlike my time with my son, spending time with friends that I had not seen for quite some time had a real reunion feel to it. “How have you been?” “What have you been up to?” “So really, how are you doing?”

I always enjoy reconnecting with family and friends. There is something about real face time to check in, catch up, and just enjoy each other’s company. My hope is that this will be our experience this upcoming weekend at Convention.

As the person who has the distinct blessing and privilege of regularly visiting a great deal of our faith communities, we have much to share with each other. Each and every Episcopal church in Minnesota brings something to contribute to this gathering. As such, for those able to be there, please take the opportunity to reach out and connect or reconnect.

I look forward to seeing you at Convention.
