As we drove along winding mountain roads on a beautiful spring day, my attention was drawn to the number of homes with older-model cars—some might say classics—resting on their property.
I found myself wondering how many of these vehicles represent someone’s dream of restoration to its original glory… or perhaps something even more ambitious. Someday I’m going to…
In the book Four Thousand Weeks, Oliver Burkeman writes about the ‘myth of someday’:
“Once things settle down…
When I have more time…
After I finish everything else…”
He goes on to say:
“We imagine that someday we’ll get around to what really matters—but that day never comes.”
If Burkeman is right—that we have, on average, only four thousand weeks—and yet our lists of dreams, hopes, and aspirations stretch far beyond that, then we are called to discern what truly matters.
Which dreams will we chase, and which will we set aside?
Which “someday” will we bring into today—and which will we release?
Life does not simply invite us to dream, but to choose, to act, and to make our limited time count.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12)
May there be peace within you today.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just as you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.
It is there for each and every one of us. —Attributed to Mother Teresa
