Moments That Rise Above…

You may notice it because the camera catches it and makes a big deal of it.
You may see it and no one mentions it at all.
Either way, it’s hard not to appreciate.

The Olympics have begun. The Super Bowl will be played today.
In both, competition reaches its highest levels—bodies pushed to their limits, preparation tested, and stakes impossibly high. And if you pay attention, amid the intense, hard-fought battles between competitors, you will witness something else entirely.

Moments of mutual respect.

A football player reaches down and pulls up an opposing teammate. Two runners—who moments earlier were straining for the same finish line—are now embracing, talking, and congratulating one another. Gestures easily missed, yet unmistakable.

Moments of mutual support.

In post-game and post-event interviews, players and coaches speak with admiration about those they were just going head-to-head against—naming their skill, their discipline, their heart.

Moments of mutual appreciation.

“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have—and how we treat those we compete against.”
—Vince Lombardi

“I have grown most not from victories, but from relationships—with rivals who demanded my best.”
—Serena Williams

A legendary coach and a legendary athlete—both of whom achieved rare-air success—articulate a deeper truth: the real value of competition is found not only in winning, but in the relationships forged along the way. They embody the capacity to see the other not merely as a rival or opponent, or even simply as a fellow athlete, but as a person who shares the same passion, discipline, and love of the game.

Enjoy the games. Watch for the moments that rise above winning and losing—and may they shape how you live, compete, and love.

“Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another.” —Proverbs 27:17
