Can you hear that…?
Listen very deeply, what do you hear?
Is there too much “outside” noise? Is there too much “inside” noise?
Where do you go to only hear the voice of God?
Jesus offered this: “But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray.” (Matthew 6:6)
So where do you go to find that place that is as Jesus modeled? “And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray.” (Matthew 14:23)
Do you have a room, a mountain, a place where you can shut out both external and internal noise so that all you can hear is that still small voice of the Holy One?
The world around us screams out for our attention. The world within us is often hard to turn off. Yet, if we can find and create that space in our lives where all “noise” is truly eliminated, that space were it is only ourself and God, we might be amazed by what we hear.
In his book The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran writes, “Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.” My prayer for all of us this Lenten season is that we will create space where we are completely alone with God.
